Jenny Mayhew, LCSW, has extensive experience in the counseling profession, specifically in the area of treating those who struggle with eating disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma.

Jenny developed her private practice in 1998, helping clients to let go of burdensome behaviors and thoughts, and to live life to the fullest. She works primarily with teens, adults and families.

Jenny also provides educational workshops for schools, churches, and other organizations on topics related to eating disorders and body image.

You were born to be real, not to be perfect.

Treatment Approach

Jenny's philosophy is that people have an enormous capacity to grow and change in amazing ways. Her style is relational, empowering, and safe.

Specifically, Jenny is trained in:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a type of therapy that challenges and reframes destructive beliefs and thought distortions (including body image distortions) which can result in depression and anxiety.

Insight-Oriented Therapies which encourage people to break free from old habits and behavior patterns by looking inward and to the past to figure out and change their emotions, motivations, and self-talk.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) which teaches new skills to help people cope with painful emotions, get through crises, and to deal more effectively with others.

Brainspotting which utilizes the visual field to quickly and effectively process trauma, difficult emotions, and negative self beliefs. Brainspotting can also be used to address negative body image and chronic pain, as well as to enhance performance in sports and the arts. See brainspotting.com for more information.

Family-Based Therapy (FBT) or Maudsley Approach which empowers and coaches families in re-feeding adolescents who struggle with Anorexia or Bulimia. Jenny is certified as a Family Based Therapist for the Treatment of Eating Disorders through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders. See maudsleyparents.org for more information on FBT.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction which involves practicing techniques to bring one’s attention to the present moment without judgment in order to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Undergirding all of these treatment methods, Jenny educates clients about the the current findings in the field of neuropsychology, offering opportunities for clients to learn more about why their brains get stuck in certain ways, and how to use brain-based interventions to make changes.

Jenny tailors her approach according to the needs, preferences and strengths of each client.

You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

About

Jenny earned her B.A. in Psychology at Pepperdine University and graduated with honors. Post college, she worked for a year at a children's psychiatric hospital and then went on to get her Masters in Clinical Social Work from Boston University. Having grown up in the Bay Area, Jenny returned after graduation to begin her career. She started working primarily with children, teens and families at a number of settings, including youth and family clinics, elementary schools, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and intensive outpatient eating disorder treatment centers. She also started an Art and Play Therapy Center for disadvantaged children in downtown San Jose.

Jenny developed her specialty in treating eating disorders when she began leading "Begin From Within" Groups and Workshops, a program for overcoming food, weight and body issues. Having overcome an eating disorder in her high school years, it felt like a great fit of skills and experience. Her expertise in treating depression, anxiety and trauma has been a natural outgrowth of her work helping clients overcome eating disorders and her years of counseling youth and adults.

Jenny is certified as a Family Based Therapist for the Treatment of Eating Disorders through the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders. This type of therapy is also called Maudsley Therapy. See maudsleyparents.org for more information on FBT.

Jenny is also certified in Brainspotting, which utilizes the visual field to quickly and effectively process trauma, difficult emotions, and negative self beliefs. See brainspotting.com for more information.

Jenny is highly dedicated to providing her clients with the highest standard of care.

On a personal note, Jenny is married and has two college-age young adults. In her free time, Jenny enjoys hiking, studying Mandarin Chinese, and playing with her two dogs.

Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit.
